Handbag Sizes Explained: Which Size Do You Actually Need?

Most people need a bag 28 to 32 cm wide. That size holds a wallet, phone, keys, a 500 ml bottle and a small pouch without going slack. A 13-inch laptop needs 35 cm or more.

Quick answer

Work out what you carry on a normal Tuesday, then match it to a width. Under 24 cm is sling and small handheld territory, which suits evenings and quick errands. Between 28 and 32 cm is the everyday size most women settle on after owning a few bags. At 35 cm and above you are buying a tote, and that is the only size where an A4 folder lies flat. It also stays in proportion on an average frame.

How handbag measurements actually work

Three numbers appear on almost every product page. Width is measured across the widest part of the body, not across the handles. Height runs from the base to the top edge of the body, with the handle excluded. Depth is the gusset, and it is the number shoppers skip past most often, even though it decides whether your water bottle stands upright or has to lie on its side.

Two more numbers are worth hunting for. Handle drop is the vertical gap between the top of the handle and the top of the bag. Below roughly 10 cm you will end up carrying the bag in your hand rather than on your shoulder once you have a jacket or a dupatta in the way. Strap drop applies to slings. Anything adjustable between about 55 and 65 cm can sit either at your hip or high across the chest, which is the setting you want on a crowded metro.

Here is a sanity check that takes thirty seconds and saves a return. Take the width from the listing, lay a measuring tape on your dining table and mark that distance with two spoons. Now put your phone, your wallet and your bottle inside the gap. If they sit side by side with a finger of room left over, the bag will work. This is far more reliable than judging scale from a model photo, because the model may be considerably taller than you and the bag will read smaller on her.

Handbag size chart

The dimensions below are the ranges you will see across most Indian handbag brands, ours included. Use them to narrow the field, then check the exact numbers listed on the product page before you order.

Size Typical W x H x D (cm) What actually fits Best for
Micro or pouch 16-20 x 11-14 x 5-7 Phone up to 6.7 inch, card holder, lipstick, keys Weddings, parties, dinners out
Small sling or crossbody 21-25 x 15-18 x 7-10 Everything above plus a small wallet, a folding umbrella and a 350 ml bottle Errands, cafes, travel days, metro commutes
Medium shoulder, satchel or bucket 26-32 x 20-26 x 11-14 Long wallet, 500 ml bottle standing upright, sunglasses case, A5 diary, tablet up to 10 inch, small cosmetics pouch Daily use, college, office days with no laptop
Large tote or backpack 33-38 x 28-33 x 12-16 13-inch laptop in a slim sleeve, A4 file lying flat, lunch box, 1 litre bottle, charger, umbrella Office commute, client visits, day flights
Oversized tote or weekender 40-48 x 32-38 x 16-20 15-inch laptop, A4 ring binder, one change of clothes, toiletry pouch Overnight trips, airport days, shoot days

One caveat on the large column. A 13-inch laptop is roughly 30 cm wide, so a 33 cm bag will take it, but only just, and only if the gusset is at least 12 cm and the opening is not tapered. If your laptop is the main reason you are buying the bag, give yourself 35 cm and stop worrying about it. Our tote bags sit in that bracket and so do most of the backpacks.

Pick the size by the day you are having

The laptop commute

You need 35 cm of width, 12 cm of depth and a flat base so the bag stands up next to your desk instead of flopping over. A top that closes properly matters more than people expect during monsoon. If you cycle or ride pillion, a backpack moves the weight onto both shoulders and your lower back will thank you by 6 pm.

Desk to dinner

A medium structured bag around 28 to 30 cm is the one that covers both halves of that day. It is large enough for a laptop-free office bag and small enough that it does not look like luggage across a restaurant table. Structured shapes hold their outline when half empty, which is why a satchel photographs better at 8 pm than a soft hobo does.

The weekend sling

Twenty-two to 24 cm wide, worn across the body, hands free. This is the size to buy if you already own a work bag and keep wishing you had something smaller. Check that the strap is adjustable rather than fixed, and check that the bag has at least one zipped pocket inside, because a sling is the bag you will be opening one-handed while holding a coffee.

Weddings and long evenings

Go small on purpose. A 16 to 20 cm handheld or a short-strap shoulder bag forces you to carry only what you need, and it will not bang into chairs while you are moving around. The only real constraint is your phone. Measure it, because a 6.7-inch phone needs about 17 cm of internal width to sit flat.

Weight is the half of sizing nobody checks

Two bags with the same dimensions can feel completely different on a long day. Empty weight is driven by the material, the hardware and the lining. A small coated vegan leather sling usually lands somewhere around 250 to 400 g empty. A medium bag of the same construction sits roughly between 450 and 700 g. A large tote or backpack is often 700 g to just over a kilogram before you put anything in it. An animal leather bag of identical dimensions will generally be heavier than its coated counterpart, sometimes noticeably so, because the hide itself is denser than a PU-coated fabric.

Then add your load. A 13-inch laptop with charger is around 1.6 kg. A 1 litre steel bottle filled is about 1.3 kg. Those two alone put you near 3 kg, so an extra 300 g of bag weight is the difference between a comfortable shoulder and a sore one. Chunky chain straps look good and they do add weight, which is fine on a 23 cm sling and less fine on a 36 cm tote.

Strap width matters as much as total weight. A narrow strap under 2 cm concentrates pressure in one spot. On anything you plan to carry loaded, look for a wider shoulder strap or twin handles that let you swap between hand and shoulder.

Three sizing mistakes we see most often

Buying one size up just in case

An oversized bag carried half empty collapses inward, loses its shape and makes everything inside hard to find. If you only occasionally need the extra room, buy for your normal day and keep a foldable bag for the exceptions.

Ignoring depth entirely

A 34 cm wide bag with a 6 cm gusset holds less than a 28 cm bag with a 13 cm gusset. Depth is what creates usable volume. It is also what stops a bag from looking flat and sad when you carry it.

Choosing by height instead of load

Proportion does matter, and a very large bag on a petite frame will read as oversized. But the bag still has to do a job. If you are 5 feet tall and carry a laptop daily, buy the tote and choose one with a shorter handle drop so the base does not hit your hip. Scale the strap, not the storage.

So what size should you buy first?

If you own nothing, start with a medium bag between 28 and 32 cm. It handles the widest spread of days and it is the size you are least likely to regret. Add a sling second, because the gap between a work bag and a party clutch is where most wardrobes fall short. Add a large tote or backpack third, and only if you are carrying a laptop or files on a regular basis. You can see how the sizes compare across our full range, and the softer bucket bags are worth a look if you want medium capacity without a rigid outline. Prices across our range sit at around Rs. 2,049, with the current price shown on each product page.

Frequently asked questions

What size handbag is best for everyday use?

A medium bag roughly 28 to 32 cm wide, 20 to 26 cm tall and 11 to 14 cm deep. That holds a long wallet, a 500 ml bottle upright, sunglasses, a small pouch and a 10-inch tablet. It is large enough for most office days and small enough not to look like luggage in the evening.

Will a 13-inch laptop fit in a medium handbag?

Usually not comfortably. A 13-inch laptop is about 30 cm wide and 21 cm deep, so you need a bag of at least 33 cm width with a gusset of 12 cm or more, and 35 cm is the safer number. A medium 28 cm bag will take a 10-inch tablet but not a laptop.

How do I measure a handbag before buying it online?

Take the width from the listing, mark that distance on a table with a measuring tape, and place your phone, wallet and bottle inside the marks. If they fit side by side with a little room to spare, the bag will work for you. Also check the handle drop, since anything under 10 cm will not sit on your shoulder over a jacket.

Is a backpack better than a tote for a daily commute?

For a loaded commute, yes. A backpack spreads the weight across both shoulders rather than loading one side, which makes a real difference once you are past about 2.5 kg. A tote wins on quick access and on looking formal in a meeting, so many people carry a backpack on travel days and a tote on office days.

What size bag should I carry to a wedding?

Between 16 and 22 cm wide. Measure your phone first, because a 6.7-inch phone needs roughly 17 cm of internal width to lie flat. A short-strap shoulder bag is more practical than a true clutch if you plan to be on your feet, since it leaves both hands free.
