Monsoon Bag Care in India: Stopping Mould, Water Stains and Odour

Dry the bag indoors within a day, never in sun or with a hairdryer, and keep stored bags in a breathable cotton cover with silica gel instead of plastic. Mould and odour come from trapped damp, not rain.

Quick answer

Rain on the outside of a coated vegan leather bag is harmless and wipes off. The damage happens when moisture reaches the fabric backing or the lining and stays there for days, which is what breeds mould and the musty smell. So the whole job is drying fast at room temperature, keeping air moving around stored bags, and checking them every two weeks from June to September.

What the monsoon actually does to a bag

The coating is fine, the backing is not

Vegan leather is a polyurethane film on a woven fabric base. The film itself is more or less waterproof, which is why a drizzle beads up and rolls off. Water does not get in through the surface. It gets in at the stitch holes, along the zip tape, around the base feet and through the unsealed inside of the lining. Once it is in the fabric layer, the coating that kept it out now keeps it in, and the bag can stay quietly damp inside for a week while feeling dry to your hand.

The lining is where the smell lives

Almost every musty bag we have seen opened up is dry on the outside and damp at the bottom corners of the lining. Mould needs moisture, warmth and still air, and the inside of a closed handbag in a Mumbai July has all three. That is also why the smell comes back a fortnight after someone has sprayed deodoriser on it. The spray treats the odour. The damp is still there.

Dust makes it worse, not just dirtier

In Delhi and most of north India the first rains land on a thick layer of road dust and turn it into a paste that dries into a crust along the seams. That crust holds moisture against the stitching for days. It is why a bag in Delhi often needs more frequent attention in July than one in Chennai, even though Chennai is more humid.

The first hour after you get home wet

  1. Empty it straight away. Wet tissues, a damp dupatta, a water bottle with condensation on it. Anything holding water comes out in the first minute.
  2. Blot, do not rub. Press a dry cotton towel against the outside. Rubbing pushes surface water into the stitch lines, which is the one place you do not want it.
  3. Open everything. Main zip, inner pockets, flap, phone slot. Turn small pockets inside out if they will go.
  4. Stuff it loosely with dry cotton. An old t shirt or two works better than anything else because it pulls moisture out of the lining while holding the shape. Change the cloth after the first hour if it feels damp. Skip newspaper in the monsoon, since damp newsprint transfers ink onto pale linings.
  5. Stand it upright under a fan on low. Four to six hours for a light soaking, overnight if it was properly drenched. Room temperature air moving across it does everything you need.
  6. Do not use heat. No hairdryer, no hot sun, no sitting it on top of the fridge or near a geyser. The film shrinks faster than the fabric under it and you get a crinkled patch that will not flatten back.
  7. Dry the hardware last. A dry cloth into the base of the zip and around each chain link. Standing water in a zip channel is how plating starts to spot and the slider stiffens up.

Backpacks need an extra step because the back panel and shoulder straps sit against you and hold sweat as well as rain. Hang the bag by its grab handle, not by the straps, and let the straps dangle free so air reaches both sides. A textured finish like the one on the Signature Textured Embossed Backpack hides water marks well, but the padding underneath still has to dry properly.

Removing mould that has already appeared

Mould on vegan leather usually shows as a fine grey or white dusting, sometimes faintly green, often concentrated near the base and inside the corners. It sits on the surface rather than rooting into it, so it comes off. Work on a balcony or near an open window so you are not pushing spores around a closed room.

  1. Dry brush first. A soft brush, light strokes, away from you. Take the loose bloom off before you add any liquid, or you will smear it into the grain.
  2. Mix one part white vinegar to four parts cool water. Half a cup of water to two tablespoons of vinegar is close enough. Vinegar kills mould without touching the polyurethane. Bleach does not belong anywhere near this bag.
  3. Wipe with a barely damp cloth. One panel at a time, including the base and the underside of the handles. Then a second pass with plain cool water to take the vinegar off.
  4. Do the lining the same way. Turn it out as far as the shape allows and get into the bottom seam, because that is almost always where it started.
  5. Dry for a full 24 to 48 hours. Stuffed, upright, fan on, indoors. This is the step people cut short, and it is the reason mould comes back.
  6. Only then put it away. Cotton cover, fresh silica gel, shelf with air around it.

The vinegar smell goes within a day. If a faint mould shadow is left on a pale bag, repeat the wipe in a week rather than scrubbing harder now, because scrubbing scuffs the topcoat and the scuff is permanent. Water stains and tide marks

A tide mark is a ring left where water evaporated unevenly and carried dissolved dust to the edge of the wet patch. The fix is counterintuitive. Do not treat the ring. Instead dampen the whole panel evenly with a cloth and let it dry as one piece, so there is no boundary for a line to form along. Work panel by panel, following the seams, and the mark disappears.

Suede effect and embroidered surfaces are the awkward ones. On the Luxe Floral Embroidered Bucket Bag, keep water off the thread work entirely and clean only the coated areas around it. Blot embroidery dry and let it air out instead. Our bucket bags sit around Rs. 2,049, with the current price shown on each product page.

Getting rid of a musty smell

Confirm the bag is actually dry inside before you do anything else. Press a tissue into the bottom corner of the lining and hold it for thirty seconds. If it comes out even slightly cool and damp, go back to drying.

Once it is dry, put two tablespoons of baking soda in a thin cotton sock, knot it, and leave it inside the closed bag for 48 hours. Do not sprinkle the powder loose into the lining, because it gets into the seams and you will be shaking white dust out for months. Activated charcoal sachets do the same job and last longer. Coffee grounds are a popular tip online and we would avoid them, since the oils can mark a light lining.

Avoid perfume and fabric spray as a fix. They layer scent over the smell for a few days and add moisture, which is the opposite of helpful.

Monsoon storage conditions

Condition Do this Not this
Cover Cotton dust bag or an old pillowcase, loosely closed Polythene, bubble wrap or the courier bag it arrived in
Moisture control Two or three silica gel sachets inside, swapped monthly Nothing at all, or a sachet left in since last year
Position Upright on an open shelf with a finger gap between bags Floor of the cupboard, or pressed against an outer wall
Airflow Open the cupboard for 20 minutes on any dry morning A cupboard kept shut from June to September
Pest and odour tablets Camphor or naphthalene in a muslin pouch, away from the bag Tablets touching the coating, which can mark or soften it
Stuffing Clean cotton cloth or plain acid free paper Newspaper, which transfers ink in humidity
Check frequency Every fortnight through the rains, used or not Once at the end of the season

What to carry between June and September

Smaller and more structured beats large and slouchy in the rain. A compact bag with a flap and a defined base keeps its contents covered and dries out quickly, and there is less surface area for water to find a way in. The Refined Two Texture Structured Flap Bag is the shape we reach for ourselves in July. A crossbody worn under a jacket or across the chest stays drier than a tote on the forearm, simply because it is closer to your body and away from the splash line.

Darker colourways and textured finishes are forgiving about water spotting, which matters more than it sounds when you are getting in and out of autos. Keep the pale and metallic pieces for drier weeks. We run over a hundred colourways across the range, so it is easy to keep a monsoon bag and a dry season bag in rotation, and you can see what has just landed in new arrivals. A quick look through the shoulder bags will give you a sense of which shapes sit closest to the body.

When the rains finish, give every stored bag one dry wipe, one fresh silica sachet and a new cotton cover before it goes back for the winter. The method for putting them away properly is in how to store handbags so they keep their shape.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove mould from a vegan leather bag?

Dry brush the bloom off first, then wipe the bag with a cloth wrung out in one part white vinegar to four parts cool water. Follow with a plain water wipe and dry it stuffed and upright indoors for 24 to 48 hours. Do not use bleach and do not dry it in the sun.

Is it bad to store handbags in plastic covers during the monsoon?

Yes. Plastic traps the humidity already inside the bag and condensation forms against the coating, which is close to ideal conditions for mould. Use a cotton dust bag or a spare pillowcase so air can pass through, and keep silica gel sachets inside the bag.

Can I dry a wet bag with a hairdryer?

No. The polyurethane coating contracts faster than the fabric backing it is bonded to, so heat leaves a crinkled, slightly plasticky patch that will not flatten out. A fan on low at room temperature is both safer and quicker than most people expect.

Why does my bag smell musty even after cleaning it?

Because it is still damp somewhere, almost always in the bottom corners of the lining. Press a tissue into the corner for thirty seconds and see if it comes out cool and damp. Dry the bag fully for two days, then deodorise with baking soda in a cotton sock or an activated charcoal sachet.

How often should I check bags stored during the rainy season?

Every two weeks from June through September, even for bags you have not touched. Open the cupboard, take each bag out, look at the base and the inside corners, and replace any silica gel that feels heavy or has changed colour. Catching a bloom in week one takes five minutes to fix.
